High pressure builds briefly over our region – timed perfectly to give us a sunny day, but a chilly one at that as high temperatures struggle to rise above 40 degrees. Clouds thicken this evening ahead of our next system which will bring some wintry precipitation to the area early Monday morning, with morning commute impacts in some areas.
The winds from yesterday are still with us this morning, but will ease up by the middle of the afternoon. That’s when temperatures will be at their peak, near 40 degrees. As chilly as that is for the end of March, it will feel much milder compared to this morning where we’ve seen widespread teens and single digits for wind chills.
Temperatures quickly drop as we lose the winds under partly cloudy skies this evening, but will climb a few degrees (near freezing in Albany) by daybreak Monday.
An approaching warm front will send a band of snow showers our way starting to the southwest around 2 AM, lifting to the northeast as we progress towards sunrise. Warmer air behind the front will quickly transition most areas to plain old rain showers. However, particularly for our northern areas and the mountains, I don’t expect this transition to occur until after the morning commute.
In total, accumulations will be minor for the vast majority of the region. It’s just that the coating in the forecast likely piles up throughout the morning commute. In the northern mountains, several inches of wet snow are possible before temperatures climb.
With a little bit of afternoon sunshine and less persistent shower activity, temperatures should push the 50 degree mark. It will be a bit breezy as well, with gusts to around 30 MPH possible.
As the system’s cold front approaches Monday late afternoon-evening, a band or broken band of showers should accompany it, similar to what we saw yesterday afternoon across the area (though I think with less wind in comparison). As cold air rushes in behind the front Monday night, it may catch up to these showers, especially in higher elevations to produce additional snow showers. Outside of the Adirondacks – which will be dealing with lake-effect snow showers and flurries through Tuesday – additional accumulations look minimal at best.
More sun is expected particularly to the southeast of Albany Tuesday, which could allow for temperatures there to make a run for 50 degrees. Cloud cover will be more consistent to the northwest, keeping temperatures in the 30s and low 40s. A chilly Wednesday is in store, with a rain or snow shower possible depending on timing and elevation courtesy of a pair of weak systems which will be near the region for the middle of the work week.
More sun and milder temperatures follow up a cold Wednesday, with just the chance for a rain shower or two by Friday. Showers are more likely for the weekend, and some of it might be wintry. We will keep a close eye on this system, as it is expected to also create a large temperature gradient across the northeast. We may be stuck with a mix, while just to our southwest enjoys another taste of spring!
