MINNEAPOLIS — The Pacers will be missing four starters in Monday night’s game against the Timberwolves as All-Star point guard Tyrese Haliburton, forward Aaron Nesmith and center Myles Turner have all been ruled out with injuries, Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said in his pre-game press conference Monday.
All three were listed as questionable heading into Monday’s game. Haliburton has a sore lower back, Turner a left hip contusion. Nesmith is out for injury management for the left ankle sprain that cost him 35 games from Nov. 1 to Jan. 16. All-Star forward Pascal Siakam was ruled out yesterday for personal reasons. Rookie wing Johnny Furphy was also ruled out with an illness.
That will require a near-complete lineup overhaul. The Pacers are moving Andrew Nembhard from shooting guard to point guard, his natural position, and moving reserves Bennedict Mathurin, Jarace Walker, Obi Toppin and Thomas Bryant into the starting lineup. That leaves point guard T.J. McConnell, wing Ben Sheppard, center Tony Bradley and two-way contract players RayJ Dennis, Quenton Jackson and Enrique Freeman available off the bench.
They’ll be going up against a Minnesota team that has won eight straight games and is 40-29.
“We’ve got a deep roster and we have all our two-ways here,” Carlisle said. “We have talented depth guys who are dying for an opportunity like this. We had a good prep session this morning. I’m excited for them. They’re playing one of the hottest teams in the league right now. It’s very challenging, but Nembhard will start at point in Ty’s stead and we’ll go from there.”

The Pacers haven’t had much opportunity to put together a game plan and work on it as they’re on the road and coming off a back-to-back Friday and Saturday night at Philadelphia and Milwaukee. They took Sunday off and had an optional shootaround Monday to put together lineup combinations they haven’t had all season.
“Obviously it’s tough having these players out,” Sheppard said. “But it’s a good opportunity for the rest of the guys to pick each other up and just play free and just play Pacer basketball. … I feel like we already have a lot of chemistry in terms that everybody knows the system. Everybody knows what to do out there. The group of guys we have out there tonight haven’t played that much together but we’ll see what happens.”
Having Siakam, Haliburton, Turner and Nesmith out also means the Pacers are missing four of their top five scorers. Siakam leads the team in both scoring and rebounding with 20.9 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. Haliburton is second with 18.5 points and ranks fourth in the NBA with 9.0 assists per game and is riding a nine-game streak of points-assists double-doubles with 119 assists versus 10 turnovers since the All-Star break.
Turner is averaging 15.5 points per game to go with 6.4 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game. Nesmith is averaging 11.2 points per game including 16.2 per game since the All-Star break. He scored a career-high 30 points in Saturday’s loss to the Bucks.
That leaves the Pacers with two players averaging in double figures in Mathurin (15.9 ppg) and Nembhard (10.1 ppg).
