Rewinding Oregon’s loss to Duke in the NCAA Tournament: Live updates recap

DURHAM, N.C. — The Oregon Ducks‘ season came to a bitter end at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Sunday.

No. 10 seed Oregon lost, 59-53, to No. 2 seed Duke in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Deja Kelly led the way for the Ducks with 20 points, Phillipina Kyei put up 14 points and 13 rebounds, and Peyton Scott suffered an apparent knee injury late in the third quarter.

The Blue Devils hung on for the win and are headed to the Sweet 16 despite trailing, 28-23, at the half and the game remaining close deep into the fourth quarter.

Duke got 20 points from Ashlon Jackson, whose three-point shooting buried the Ducks in the third and fourth quarter.

1ST QUARTER:

  • Kelly off to a strong start for the Ducks, scoring four of their first five as Oregon leads 5-2, 7:13 1Q.
  • Duke looking skittish early, turning the ball over and struggling on offense. 7-2 Ducks, 4:42 1Q.
  • A quick 5-0 spurt has Cameron rocking. 7-7, 3:05 1Q.
  • Oregon really struggling with turnovers as the first quarter progresses. But a three-pointer by Sofia Bell makes it 10-7 Ducks, 40.0 seconds to go.
  • END 1Q: Oregon 12, Duke 9. Blue Devils shoot just 29%, but Oregon’s six turnovers keep it close.

2ND QUARTER:

  • Three consecutive airballs to start the quarter for both teams. Woof.
  • Deja Kelly, and-one. 15-9 Ducks, 8:22 2Q.
  • Kelly up to nine points, but she gets called for a push-off for her second foul of the game. 17-12 Ducks, 7:09 2Q.
  • With Kelly sidelined, Peyton Scott is running the show for Oregon. She finds Nani Falatea for three, and it’s 22-15 Ducks, 4:50 2Q.
  • Amina Muhammad fights for the board and scores. 24-15 Ducks, 3:51 2Q.
  • Duke with a 6-0 run to cut the Oregon lead to 24-21. 1:30 to go in the half.
  • HALF: Oregon 28, Duke 23.

3RD QUARTER:

  • Ashlon Jackson nails a pair of three-pointers to open the second half for Duke. 29-28 Blue Devils, 8:33 3Q.
  • 8-0 run now for the Blue Devils. 31-28 Duke, 7:05 3Q.
  • Another one from deep for Jackson. 11-0 run. 34-28 Duke, 6:31 3Q.
  • Timeout on the floor. Oregon has yet to hit a shot from the field this half. 36-29 Duke, 4:40 3Q.
  • Jackson hits her fourth three-pointer of the quarter, giving Duke a 39-29 lead.
  • Kelly hits back-to-back jumpers to cut the lead to five, but the Ducks don’t get back and it forces Kyei to commit her third foul, and-one. 44-36 Blue Devils, 2:30 3Q.
  • Peyton Scott is down and injured for Oregon. She leaves without putting weight on her right leg, which is in a large brace. Brutal loss for the Ducks, who trail 45-40 after three quarters.

4TH QUARTER:

  • Three-pointer from Falatea cuts the Duke lead to 45-43, 8:54 to go.
  • Kyei powers to the basket, and-one. Free throw good. 47-46 Duke, 7:18 to go.
  • Timeout on the floor. The Ducks are fighting down the stretch in what’s becoming another March classic. 49-48 Duke, 4:57 to go.
  • Peyton Scott has returned to the Oregon sideline on crutches. She is done for the day.
  • Two free throws gives Duke a 53-50 lead with 3:19 to go.
  • Ducks are force-feeding Kyei down low. She splits a pair of free throws, and it’s 55-51 Duke with 2:25 to go.
  • Ehis Etute flings a layup over the rim and misses badly. Ducks still down four, 1:38 to go.
  • Ashlon Jackson nails a three-pointer from the corner, and she’s up to 19 points. 58-51 Duke, 1:12 to go.
  • Kelly hits a pair of free throws. 58-53 Duke, 1:10 to go.
  • Oregon gets the stop, holds the jump ball with their possession. Ducks ball, trailing 58-53 with 44.7 seconds left.
  • Oregon fails to score, and it’s a jump ball giving it back to Duke with 30.5 seconds remaining, Blue Devils up five.
  • Duke turns it over on the offensive foul. Ducks ball with 29.2 seconds left.
  • Nani Falatea misses. Duke has it back with 21.6 seconds to go.
  • FINAL: Duke 59, Oregon 53.
