The San Francisco 49ers will have a new starting left guard next season after Aaron Banks agreed to a massive new contract with the Green Bay Packers.
NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport on Monday reported Banks and the Packers agreed on a four-year deal worth up to $77 million. It appeared likely Banks would be gone after four years with the 49ers, but any chance went out the window when his market commanded $77 million.
Banks was a second-round pick by the 49ers in the 2021 NFL draft out of Notre Dame. The Alameda native played in only nine games as a rookie with just five offensive snaps. By Year 2 he cemented himself as a starter and started 43 of the final 44 games he played with the 49ers.
San Francisco is looking to retool on the offensive line and they weren’t in a position to cash out a player who was going to get money at or near the top of the interior offensive line market. Instead they’ll hunt for cheaper options, or turn to in-house candidates like Ben Bartch and Spencer Burford to fill the vacancy at left guard.
