Saints lose another free agent DB on multiyear deal with NFC East contender

The New Orleans Saints have had an intriguing start to free agency during the tampering period, and now that they have cleared up some cap space, they will have the opportunity to move on some of the remaining key free agents. However, before they do so, they did lose another one of their own re-signing candidates, as safety Will Harris has signed a two-year deal with the Washington Commanders, as was reported by Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.

The deal will be worth $8 million with a potential maximum value of up to $10 million according to the same report. This is a pretty substantial upgrade for Harris in terms of his contract, as he was only making the veteran minimum of $1,292,500 in 2024. This will also be a great opportunity for Harris to join a contending team in the NFC, as the Commanders have been loading up on premier players throughout the offseason in anticipation of a strong playoff run again in 2025.

As for the Saints, it would have been hard to justify four million a year for a safety, when they are relatively low on funds, and Harris, while good, was not spectacular. With that said, they will need to address the position via a different signing or a draft selection in the coming weeks, as it currently is a relatively weak spot for the team with Tyrann Mathieu, Jordan Howden, and J.T. Gray being the only three actively rostered players at safety.

It will be intriguing to see which route they go at the position in 2025, as there are a few still remaining in free agency who would be good adds, and some very solid ones in the draft class who could provide some long-term outlook at the position if the Saints prefer that method instead.
