Stephen A. Smith Says Bronny James Controversy Ruined Friendship with NBA Star

ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith is one of the more outspoken sportscasters in the business.

And his garishly opinionated nature has gotten him in trouble from time to time, most recently and arguably most noticeably, with Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James.

Smith was confronted by the 21-time All-Star a few days ago for remarks he’d recently made about James’ son Bronny, who he declared wasn’t an NBA player.

“I am pleading with LeBron James, as a father — stop this, stop this,” Smith said. “We all know that Bronny James is in the NBA because of his dad … We know that [Bronny isn’t] ready yet, and I’m saying this with compassion.”

While Smith believed his criticism was fair, James clearly took exception to Smith throwing shade as the way Bronny’s development is being handled — he’s bounced around between the NBA and the G League, where he’s played in 15 games and averaged 17.5 points per game for the South Beach Lakers.

Video of James and Smith’s altercation went viral on social media, which brought a tremendous amount of blowback for Smith, who was torched by hundreds of fans on social media. But the backlash didn’t end there.

Smith revealed during a recent episode of “The Stephen A. Smith Show” that the LeBron-Bronny incident also negatively affected his relationship with one current Golden State Warriors star.

“I heard that not many, not all, but a few players were upset at me about that,” Smith said. “I think one player, in particular, was Draymond Green, who I haven’t spoken to since and has no desire to speak to me, primarily because of this, I supposed.”

Smith also clarified that his initial remarks weren’t meant to be critical of Bronny but of James himself for pressuring the Lakers to draft him and then keep him on the NBA roster.

“I have never would speak negatively about your son,” Smith said he told James. “I was talking to you, meaning you, LeBron James. … When I said the things that I said, I wasn’t talking about Bronny James. I was talking about the position he was put in by his dad.”
