1 dead after hit-and-run boat crash involving Clearwater Ferry

CLEARWATER, Fla. — One person has died after a hit-and-run boat crash involving the Clearwater Ferry, public safety officials said Sunday night.

The crash occured near the Memorial Causeway bridge, and was declared a mass casualty incident by officials due to the amount of injuries.

Police say the boat that fled the scene has been identified by another law enforcement agency.

45 people were on board the ferry at the time of the crash and at least six people were initially declared as trauma alerts, police say.

Officials say the boat came to a rest on a sandbar and all passengers were removed.

The U.S. Coast Guard and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Convervation Commission are handling the crash investigation.
