How ‘Good Boy’ Reimagines The Haunted House Genre Through The Lens Of The Family Dog — SXSW Studio

GOOD BOY

Section: Midnighters

Director: Ben Leonberg

Screenwriter: Alex Cannon, Ben Leonberg

Logline: Good Boy started with a simple high concept: a haunted house film, where the main character is the family dog–and the only one who can see the forces that haunt us. Our canine hero, Indy, finds himself on a new adventure with his human—and best friend—Todd, leaving city life for a long-vacant family home in the country. After moving in, Indy is immediately vexed by empty corners, tracks an invisible presence, perceives phantasmagoric warnings from a long-dead dog, and is haunted by visions of the previous occupant’s grim death. When Todd begins succumbing to the dark forces swirling around the house, Indy must battle a malevolence intent on dragging his beloved Todd into the afterlife!

Panelists: Ben Leonberg, Kari Fischer (producer), Indy

Sales Agent: Amy Beecroft, Verve

Premiered: March 8, Alamo Lamar 5

Key Quote: “I think everybody who has had a pet has wondered or maybe worried why their dog was barking at nothing or staring at empty corners. We kind of wanted to explore that as just a core engine of the movie and spin it into a haunted house movie,” Leonberg told Deadline. “They say don’t work with kids or animals for a reason…the solution to that challenge was to build a production entirely around him.”

The Deadline Studio at SXSW runs March 7-10, where the cast and creatives behind the best and buzziest titles in this year’s lineup sit down with Deadline’s festival team to discuss their movies and the paths they took to get to Austin, Texas.
