The Carolina Hurricanes will host the Detroit Red Wings to kick off Friday’s slate. The NHL odds list Carolina as a -245 favorite, while the total is set at 5.5.
Detroit has covered the spread in seven of the last nine meetings between these teams, and my Red Wings vs. Hurricanes predictions expect this trend to continue.

My analysis
Over the last two months, the Detroit Red Wings have been generating high danger scoring chances at a high rate.
In fact, the Red Wings outrank the Carolina Hurricanes in xGF/60 over that stretch. That alone is reason to believe the underdogs can keep this game close, but there are more reasons to be optimistic about Detroit’s chances.
The group is coming off a dominant 7-3 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday night. There were two key takeaways from that outing, with the first being that the top-six forward group looked tremendous.
Goaltender Petr Mrazek also looked strong in the first game of his reunion with the Wings, surrendering just two goals at even-strength. This success could continue against Carolina, a team Mrazek boasts a .928 SV% against through 14 career meetings.
Meanwhile, the Canes are banged up, with Dmitry Orlov and Andrei Svechnikov doubtful for this game. With Detroit desperate to remain in the playoff chase, take the Wings to keep things close in Raleigh.
