First Alert Weather Day: Significant tornado threat heading into Saturday afternoon/evening

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – SIGNIFICANT TORNADO THREAT SATURDAY: Please be weather alert as we move through the night and throughout the day Saturday. All the ingredients are coming together for a major tornado threat across Alabama. A rare SPC high risk for severe weather has been issued and the last time we had a high risk was March 25, 2021.

Round number one is occurring right now. We had a Tornado Warning issued for parts of Marion County. We are now tracking some strong storms including heavy rain, hail, gusty winds, and possible severe thunderstorms moving across north central Alabama on First Alert AccuTrack radar. This first round of storms is expected to lift northeast by 8 a.m.

However, it won’t be long before a second round of storms surges north by lunchtime. The risk of significant long-track tornadoes will be in place throughout the afternoon and evening for the entire area. Now is a time to treat severe thunderstorm warnings as early alerts for possible tornado warnings.

In addition to severe storms, there will be a risk of heavy rain and flash flooding. Storms will exit late Saturday night, with sunshine returning on Sunday.

Dry weather continues through St. Patrick’s Day and Tuesday, with a chance for showers and storms returning by late Wednesday. This next chance of rain will be associated with a cold front. Right now, no organized severe weather is expected. However, it looks like this front will bring a big drop in temperatures, with the mid-30s possible for the morning of the 21st.
