Large fire engulfs tavern in Uptown Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A two-alarm fire erupted Saturday morning at the Morehead Tavern in Uptown Charlotte, prompting a large response from the Charlotte Fire Department.

The building fire broke out in 300 block of East Morehead Street around 8 a.m. near Caldwell Street. The fire was visible when firefighters arrived, with smoke billowing from the business.

Charlotte Fire struck a second alarm shortly after they got to the scene. They worked throughout the morning to contain the flames and prevent spread to nearby structures in the busy Uptown area.

As of 9:30 a.m., E. Morehead Street was closed from Euclid Ave. to S. Tryon Street. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is asking drivers to avoid the area.

Authorities have not yet released information about cause of the fire, or the extent of the damage.

Medic said no injuries were reported as of around 9 a.m.

Because the Blue Line tracks are close to the building, CATS operations were also impacted.

The bus bridge has been extended to Bland St. Station. Buses will now service CTC to Bland St. Stations until further notice. Click the link below to learn more. https://t.co/Np2Pj1Yfq4
