BREAKING: Helicopter crashed into the Hudson River Thursday afternoon

At least five people are dead after a helicopter crashed into the Hudson River Thursday afternoon, according to the NYPD.

The tragic incident occurred off of Manhattan’s Tribeca neighborhood in the Hudson River at around 3:20 p.m., police sources said.

“Due to a helicopter crash in the Hudson River, in the vicinity of the West Side Highway and Spring Street, expect emergency vehicles and traffic delays in the surrounding areas,” a post on the NYPD’s X page stated. 

FDNY, including the department’s land marine units, immediately responded to the scene. 

According to the Citizen app, five people are reportedly dead with another person missing.

It is unclear right now how the helicopter, a Bell 206, crashed or who owns it. According to a WABC article, passengers on board were a mix of children and adults. 

New York Waterway, which operates ferries in the Hudson River, were involved in the search effort. Their service is operating with residual delays.
