Canada election live: Mark Carney vows ‘Trump will never break us’ after election win

French President Emmanuel Macron has joined the chorus of world leaders congratulating Mark Carney on his remarkable election victory.

Macron said he looked forward to working with the Canadian leader “elbow to elbow”.

“You embody a strong Canada in the face of today’s challenges,” he said. “France is glad to further strengthen the friendship which unites our two countries.”

Nato secretary general Mark Rutte also congratulated the Liberal leader’s election win, saying Canada remained a “valued member of Nato”.

“I look forward to working together to build an even stronger, fairer Alliance – investing more in defence & ramping up industrial production so we have what we need to stay safe,” he said.

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre is on track to lose his seat as well as the election.

Poilievre is trailing Liberal candidate Bruce Fanjoy in Ontario’s Carelton riding, and CBC News projects Poilievre will not retain his seat for an eighth consecutive term.

The Conservatives have so far won 133 seats and are on track to claim 11 more, CBC News tallies show.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has welcomed Mark Carney’s election victory.

“Ukraine deeply values our close ties with Canada and the unwavering support of the Canadian people,” he said on social media.

“We are sincerely grateful for Canada’s principled leadership in supporting Ukraine — from military, financial, and humanitarian assistance to imposing sanctions against Russia.

“We are confident that our partnership will only grow stronger in our shared pursuit of peace, justice, and security.”

UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has praised Canada as “the closest of allies” following Mark Carney’s election victory.

“With your leadership, and personal ties to the UK, I know the relationship between our two countries will continue to grow,” Sir Keir said in a statement. Carney was governor of the Bank of England between 2013 and 2020.

Sir Keir said the countries would continue to deepen their economic relationship, including at the upcoming G7 meetings being hosted by Canada.

“I welcome your leadership on international issues, and I know we will continue to work closely on defence, security, trade and investment as we look ahead to the G7 Leaders’ Summit in Kananaskis in June,” he said.

Newly re-elected Prime Minister Mark Carney will face a host of domestic and international challenges from day one.

Internally, Canada has been dealing with a cost-of-living crisis for some time. And more than 75 per cent of its exports go to the US, so President Donald Trump’s threat to impose sweeping tariffs and his desire to get North American automakers to move Canada’s production south could severely damage the Canadian economy.

Trump has also regularly threatened to turn Canada into America’s 51st state, and Carney has already said he will sit down and negotiate with Trump as a sovereign nation that has many other options when it comes to trade.

An added difficulty for Carney is the fact it appears the Liberal Party may not win an outright majority of seats, and could end up having to negotiate with a minor party to pass legislation.

As Canada’s Liberal Party celebrates an election victory that seemed a remote chance just months ago, another Liberal Party will be watching on nervously.

Australia is holding its federal election in a matter of days, where a similar story appears to be playing out.

The left-leaning Labor Party was lagging in opinion polls as late as February, putting Australia’s conservative Liberal Party in a strong fighting position to win back government on May 3 after just one term out of office.

But Donald Trump’s trade wars and upheaval of American policies on everything from immigration to education have alarmed Australian voters, and the Labor Party has accused Liberal Leader Peter Dutton of copying the US President over policies such as planned cuts to the public service.

Now, most Australian approval polls have given the Labor Party an election-winning lead.

Saturday’s election is still expected to be close, but it seems Trump may help hinder another conservative opposition from winning government this week.

Donald Trump’s attacks on Canadian sovereignty and increasingly aggressive trade policy helped the incumbent Liberal Party snatch a narrow victory on election night.

The Liberals looked headed for a crushing defeat until the American president started attacking Canada’s economy and suggesting it should become the 51st state.

Trump’s actions infuriated Canadians and stoked a surge in nationalism that helped the Liberals flip the election narrative and win a fourth-straight term in power.

The Conservative Party’s leader Pierre Poilievre had hoped to make the election a referendum on former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, whose popularity had fallen towards the end of his decade in power as the cost of living rose.

But Mark Carney, a two-time central bank governor, took over from Trudeau and took a tough stance on Trump.

In his victory speech, Carney warned that America “wants our land, our resources, our water, our country” and vowed that Canada would win the trade war.
