Cavs to be without star player Tuesday night vs. Chicago

CHICAGO — The scheduled rest games will continue for the league-leading Cavs Tuesday night.

All-Star forward Evan Mobley, who missed time earlier this season with a minor calf injury, has been ruled out against the Chicago Bulls.

Tuesday’s matchup is the first of a back-to-back, with Cleveland hosting Miami Wednesday night at Rocket Arena. Tuesday is also the second game in a three-in-four-night stretch that started Sunday afternoon — a game in which Mobley logged 32 minutes before fouling out.

Cavs coach Kenny Atkinson has spoken throughout the season about a big-picture plan to get his key players through the 82-game grind, looking for rest opportunities. Tuesday will be Mobley’s seventh absence.

By rule, he can only miss 10 more games to remain eligible for end-of-season awards. In the midst of a career year, Mobley is considered the frontrunner for Defensive Player of the Year. He also has a chance to make his first All-NBA team.

The Cavs, 50-10, have won 10 straight and hold a comfortable seven-and-a-half game lead over Boston in the Eastern Conference. This month, they will play 16 total games in 30 days, with 10 of those on the road — their most grueling schedule stretch.

In 54 games this season, Mobley is averaging 18.6 points, 9.3 rebounds and 3.1 assists.
