Chiefs bolster secondary with signing of former Chargers cornerback

The Kansas City Chiefs’ secondary is looking sharp heading into the 2025 season with the savvy addition of veteran cornerback Kristian Fulton.

According to NFL reporter Adam Schefter, the Chiefs and Fulton’s reps were able to come to an agreement on a new two-year deal on the second day of the legal tampering period.

Terms of the deal amounted to $20 million over two years for Fulton.

The Tennessee Titans were the team that drafted Fulton into the NFL at No., 61 overall in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft. Fulton was a full-time starter with the Titans, but Tennessee let him walk in free agency and Fulton signed a one-year deal with the L.A. Chargers last spring to join Jim Harbaugh’s defense in his first year on the sidelines.

Fulton joins a young Chiefs secondary with plenty of players coming into their contract season. Trent McDuffie is the leader of a bright young batch of defensive backs, many of whom were part of the celebrated 2022 draft class for Kansas City.

Fulton being on a two-year deal gives the Chiefs some security going forward as Joshua Williams, Nazeeh Johnson, Bryan Cook, Jaylen Watson, and McDuffie could all conceivably hit free agency in 2026. (Although, McDuffie is a solid bet to stick around long term with a fifth-year option and long-term contract extension.)

Fulton had 51 total tackles for the Chargers last season to go with 9 pass deflections and 1 interception. More importantly, he showed off greater consistency than ever before with the change of scenery. Fulton can be a plus player against the run and is physical in coverage, which should make him a quick hit for Steve Spagnuolo.
