March Madness is almost officially here. With less than 48 hours until the 68-team NCAA Tournament field is revealed live on CBS, most teams have already punched their ticket, while a handful of bubble teams anxiously await their fate. Every win, loss, and resume metric matters as the selection committee makes its final decisions ahead of Selection Sunday.
This season marks the seventh year the NET rankings are used as the primary metric for assessing college basketball teams when it comes to NCAA Tournament selection and seeding. The NET takes into account game results, strength of schedule, game location, net offensive and defensive efficiency, as well as quality of wins and losses.
Using a quadrant system, the quality of wins and losses is organized based on location and the opponent’s NET ranking (i.e. Quad 1: Home 1-30, Neutral 1-50, Away 1-75). The number of Quad 1 victories in particular is important in the eyes of the section committee, which sets the field of 68 for the NCAA Tournament.
