- ‘They’ve got their old friend Aswin back’: Matthew Hayden
- Former Australian player Matthew Hayden has said that the most awaited match of the Indian Premier League, Mumbai Indians vs Chennai Super Kings is one of the best in the competition.
- Noting the strong history between MI and CSK, Hayden said on Jio Hottstar that Ravichandran Ashwin, who is back with the CSK could be a key player at the Chepauk stadium in Chennai this evening.
- “It’s such a great fixture. These two sides have so much history together. And at Chepauk, CSK has controlled the game, just like Mumbai does at Wankhede. A win there would be significant, and CSK’s spin unit–one of the best in the competition–will play a crucial role,” Hayden said.
- They’ve got their old friend back, Ravichandran Ashwin, which is great to see. He could be key on a wicket that I expect to offer turn. It’s only fitting that the season opener at Chepauk features Mumbai Indians,” he added.

- Suryakumar weighs in on absence of Pandya, Bumrah; gives hilarious reply on dealing with CSK spinners
- Mumbai Indians stand-in skipper Suryakumar Yadav backed the squad’s depth to make up for Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah’s absence in the clash of behemoths.
- Hardik received a one-match ban after the team’s last encounter in IPL 2024 against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for maintaining a slow over-rate, which has ruled him out of the clash of the heavyweights.
- Meanwhile, Bumrah is on the sidelines, recovering from a back injury he sustained in Australia during the fifth BGT Test in Sydney.
- Despite the absence of its vital cogs, Suryakumar has exuded confidence in the squad’s depth and advocated for the players who will come in to bear the responsibility on their shoulders.
- “But yeah it is difficult to fill the shoes of such amazing players. It is a part of the game and the show must go on. There are boys who can take up the responsibility and are very keen to take the field tomorrow. So replacing him with someone is a difficult task. But we have guys who can take up the responsibility,” Suryakumar told reporters on the eve of their clash against CSK.

- Don’t doubt his ability, even at this age…: Sunil Gavaskar on MS Dhoni’s retirement
- Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar brushed off speculations regarding Indian legend MS Dhoni’s retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL), and said every time people raise this question, the former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain proves them wrong.
- Lauding Dhoni, he said age is just a number for him, and he still has the ability to hit the ball into the stands”Why should we even ask that question? Why put pressure on him? Every time people question MS Dhoni, he proves them wrong. Don’t doubt his ability. Even at this age, he’s hitting sixes not just past the boundary but into the stands during practice. Age is just a number when it comes to Dhoni,” Gavaskar, who is a Jio Star expert said on Jio Hotstar.
- The former India captain also spoke about the attacking mindset displayed by batters in the IPL he said they understand how to catch the powerplay when only two fielders are allowed outside the 30-yard circle. He also talked about batters’ mindstep of scoring 10-12 runs per over which gives their team a strong platform for 180-200 runs.
- “Batters are getting more adventurous and aggressive. They understand that the powerplay–where only two fielders are outside the inner circle — must be capitalized on. You have to aim for 10-12 runs per over and reach around 60-75 runs in the first six overs, even if you lose just one wicket. That creates a strong platform to push towards 180-200 runs.” he added.
- Chennai Super Kings stalwart and legend MS Dhoni is just 19 runs shy of becoming the franchise’s highest run-scorer in the IPL. Former franchise icon Suresh Raina sits at the top with 4687 runs. Dhoni, still going strong at 43, holds an integral spot in the hierarchy of the five-time champions. He has continued to perform the role of finisher for Chennai, but over the years, his capacity has significantly reduced. —

- Speaking to the media on the opening day of the 18th edition of the cash-rich league, the former right-hand batter “It is important to see how the pitch is being prepared for the three spinners. It is also important to see the pitch. If the pitch is dry, the spinners will come into the game. I don’t think they will have an upper hand in the first half. In the second half, when the pitch is dry due to overheating, I think the three spinners will be a match-winning combination for CSK,” JioStar Marathi Expert Kedar Jadhav told ANI.

- IPL 2025 countdown | Mumbai Indians’ galaxy of stars can pull it off if they pull together
- The core remains unchanged from the previous cycle. The captain remains the same as last season.
- Still, the anticipation from Mumbai Indians is to get ahead of Chennai Super Kings in the race for the most IPL trophies. The 2024 edition saw MI suffer from lack of unity, primarily due to the captaincy change.
- The fans were vocal in their disapproval of Hardik Pandya taking over from Rohit Sharma as the skipper. The younger players were confused about whom to look up to, resulting in a unit that was anything but cohesive. That reflected in the results as the five-time champion never appeared to be a genuine contender for the playoffs race, extending its title drought to four seasons, the longest since the first five editions of the IPL.

- IPL countdown | Consistency key to CSK’s pursuit of sixth title
- Since the start of the IPL, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has been the epitome of consistency, reaching the Playoffs on every occasion it played from 2008 to 2019. However, since 2020, the team has blown hot and cold every alternate season. CSK did not qualify for the knockouts thrice (2020, 2022 & 2024) while clinching the title in 2021 and 2023.
- Last year, Super Kings failed to progress narrowly, losing out to Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Net Run Rate (NRR). After posting four wins in the first six games, CSK’s campaign stuttered towards the business-end of the league stage, adding just three more victories. The lack of firepower in the middle-order and the inability of the Indian pacers to step up proved costly.

- IPL 2025 | Indian cricket’s reactionary child turns 18… how fast the night changes!
- When the Indian Premier League baby was born in 2008, it had a burden to carry. Birthed by Lalit Modi and blessed by the ruling BCCI, the IPL came into existence to mainly thwart the rebel Indian Cricket League and maintain the governing body’s monopoly over the sport in the country.
- In the 17 years since then, it is safe to say that the reactionary child has lived up to expectations. With the foundational goal met pretty early, an unshackled IPL has experienced life to the fullest. Even corruption and betting scandals have been overcome, like how canny adolescents tackle the struggles and uncertainties that mark boyhood and youth.

- What Dhoni is achieving at 43 is remarkable, says Ruturaj Gaikwad
- Chennai Super Kings skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad was astonished at the “remarkable” ability of legendary MS Dhoni to keep contributing for the team at the age of 43 and hoped he will deliver “crucial knocks” for his side in this IPL..
- M.S. Dhoni will most likely bat at the lower-order for CSK just as he did in last year’s IPL when he usually came at No. 7 or 8.
- “A lot of new players have joined the team and sometimes they struggle to strike the ball as good as he is striking it right now. So, definitely it inspires a lot of us including myself,” Gaikwad told the media on the eve of CSK’s opening IPL match against arch-rivals Mumbai Indians.
