Eleven people have died across Missouri following Friday storms, Highway Patrol says

At least 11 people have died across the state following storms that moved through Missouri on Friday, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

The death toll was updated after a victim in Ozark County passed away early Saturday morning:

  • One death in Jefferson County
  • Three deaths in Ozark County
  • Six deaths in Wayne County
  • One deaths in Butler County

Nearly 20 tornadoes of varying strengths were reported in Missouri on Friday, impacting 25 counties.

How does a tornado become “confirmed?”

The National Weather Service is the only agency that can verify that a tornado touched down.

The service sends out survey crews made up of local meteorologists to survey the damage. It is not looking for a certain amount of damage, but rather the pattern of damage.

The National Weather Service has confirmed at least two EF-1 tornadoes in the St. Louis region. In a social media post, the weather service asked for patience as the process takes time, and the St. Louis office will not be able to survey all the damage Saturday.

This does not include the storms in Rolla or Piedmont, which were in tornado warnings Friday night, but have yet to be confirmed by the National Weather Service.

The State Highway Patrol and local agencies are working to assist those in need and assessing the damage. Troopers urge residents to stay away from debris-filled areas and to follow regional emergency services for updates.
