Evacuations ordered for fire east of Colorado Springs Airport, large amounts of smoke visible

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – Evacuations have now been ordered for a grass fire burning east of the Colorado Springs Airport.

According to Peak Alerts, anyone within a zone stretching from Gusty Bluffs Point and Meridian Road – north to Highway 94 and Franceville Coal Mine – and to the east border of Schriever Space Force Base in Ellicott, are being told to leave immediately.

Another evacuation order has been issued for Highway 94 and Franceville Coal Mine Road north to Davis Road and to the east border of Schriever Space Force Base.

That area includes all of Schriever Space Force Base.

As of 3:20 p.m., the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said Highway 94 was shut down from Marksheffel to Curtis Road. The Sheriff’s Office did not say when the highway would reopen.

Large amounts of smoke were visible across the area. A live look from 11 News’s Cheyenne Mountain Camera is visible at the top of this article.

As of this article’s last update, CSFD said there was no estimated size yet. Multiple crews are responding to the fire’s location near Meridian and Drennan Roads.
