After last night’s ugly-but-we’ll-take-it win over the Utah Hockey Club, the Detroit Red Wings face a daunting task tonight with a visit to Denver to play the Colorado Avalanche.
Not much news from the Red Wings yet today, as teams don’t generally hold morning skates on back-to-back games. However, a curious Reddit post seems to indicate that Sebastian Cossa may be coming up from Grand Rapids to join the team in Denver, but there is not yet any official confirmation or media reports to verify.
That would be an interesting wrinkle, as there were seemingly no problems last night for Alex Lyon. The Red Wings broadcast reported that Cam Talbot had dressed as the emergency backup goalie, as teams are permitted to do when they’re carrying three netminders.
With Petr Mrazek already ruled out, either Talbot or Lyon may be nursing an injury. Todd McLellan sounded hesitant about the possibility of starting Lyon tonight, even with last night’s light workload. I’m assuming Talbot will get the nod, as we’ve not yet heard otherwise, but Cossa would be in line for his first NHL start if they need him in net tonight, as his prior game came in a relief effort.
That would be quite a test against an offense as explosive as Colorado’s, but again, that’s a few degrees of assumption based on what’s only an internet rumor at this point. We’ll assume it’s Talbot’s net until any further direction from the team.
Other than that, the Red Wings will face an Avalanche team that is 8-1-1 in its last 10, one of the hottest teams in the league after loading up at the trade deadline with the likes of Brock Nelson, Charlie Coyle and Ryan Lindgren. There will be a lot of out-of-town scoreboard-watching as well, with Ottawa, Montreal, Pittsburgh and the NY Rangers also in action tonight.
UPDATE: Cossa was indeed officially recalled by the team, under emergency conditions. That doesn’t mean he’s in, or that he’ll even dress — just that the status of either Talbot or Lyon is in question for tonight.
