TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Officials with Leon County and the Emergency Management Office sent out a wireless emergency alert Saturday evening to warn residents of impending severe weather.
That alert was sent out to every phone within the county around 6:40 pm. The alert warned of “Tornadoes and damaging winds” on Sunday morning. The alert went on to say those living in mobile homes should “consider seeking shelter in a sturdy building with friends and family.”
Leon County Public Information Officer Mathieu Cavell told WCTV the alert was sent out based on the most recent guidance from the National Weather Service.
In their 4:15 pm update, the NWS sent out guidance specifically saying anyone in a mobile home should plan to stay somewhere else due to the elevated risk of tornadoes.
First Alert Meteorologists Josh Green, Rob Nucatola and Cameron Aaron have been warning for several days that severe weather is possible overnight Saturday into early Sunday morning. That forecast now looks to be quite accurate.
In an effort to help warn residents of South Georgia and the Big Bend, Josh declared Sunday a WCTV First Alert Weather Day. This means there is a significant chance for severe weather to disrupt your day.
