Lottery making big changes soon: ‘It’s a dumpster fire’

Mega Millions players, take heed.

There’s some big changes coming to the immensely popular lottery game soon. And one of them may not be all too positive.

According to a Mega Millions press release, players will have the opportunity to win bigger and faster-growing prizes against better odds, but at a price.

Literally — the same press release adds that the price of a Mega Millions ticket will more than double from its current $2 to $5.

These new enhancements — along with the new price — will make their debut “after the final drawing of the current game on Friday, April 4,” the release states. The first drawing under this new structure will occur Tuesday, April 8, at 11 p.m. (ET).

This “mega overhaul” — as the national lottery calls it — was initially announced in October, although the finer details were recently made known. This includes a starting jackpot that went from $20 million to $50 million, as well as overall odds at 1-to-23 instead of 1-to-24.

“Beyond big jackpots, players told us they want bigger non-jackpot prizes and that’s exactly what this new game delivers,” said lead director of the Mega Millions Consortium, Joshua Johnston, via statement in October.

However, many Mega Millions players appear to be not all that enthused over these changes: Commenters on social media platforms such as Reddit believe the price is far too high, even with the higher winnings.

“Yeah, Mega Millions was garbage before Powerball, now it’s a dumpster fire that needs to be put out,” reads one such comment.

“That is too high,” reads another. “A $1 or $2 purchased can be justified every so often. At $5 it is going to stop a lot of people from buying. There are many other games to play.”
