CLEVELAND, Ohio — Mega Millions is undergoing an overhaul beginning next month, with changes that lottery officials say should lead to improved odds of winning and larger jackpots.
The odds of winning the top jackpot will be 1 in 290,472,336, still a long shot but better than the current odd of 1 in 302,575,350. The overall odds of winning any amount improve to 1 in 23 instead of 1 in 24.
The multiplier option no longer will be an extra and instead will be included with each ticket, increasing the prize by two to 10 times.
That means every winning ticket will pay out at least two times the purchase price, lottery officials say. Tickets that hit all five white balls without the Mega Ball could be worth up to $10 million. Currently the top prize for five white balls is $2 million.
The overall jackpot will have a larger starting point at $50 million. The current lottery starts at $20 million.
Lottery officials are hoping the changes will make players willing to pay $5 for a single play, up from $2. But they say the changes will result in jackpots increasing more quickly and also being won more often.
The current game reached some impressive jackpots. The record was set on Aug. 8, 2023, when a ticket worth $1.6 billion was sold in Florida. The jackpot topped $1 billion six other times, most recently in December, when a prize of $1.269 billion was won in California.
