Mookie Betts won’t play in either exhibition game at the Tokyo Dome while dealing with an illness, and is questionable for the Dodgers opening day matchup against the Cubs on Tuesday, manager Dave Roberts said during media availability Saturday in Tokyo before the Dodgers’ game against the Yomiuri Giants.
“He’s been really sick, lost some weight. We’re trying to get him hydrated,” Roberts said. “He’s going to work out a little bit today, but he won’t be playing either tonight or tomorrow. Then we have our off day, our workout day. We’ll see how he is.”
Roberts said Betts started feeling sick on Monday in Arizona. He didn’t play the final two Cactus Legue games; the first off day was planned after playing the previous two days. But on Tuesday against Cleveland, Betts was scratched from the lineup. Roberts said team doctors felt it was safe enough to have Betts make the trip.
Betts took part in pregame workouts Saturday night in Tokyo ahead of the game against Yomiuri.
He’ll sit in the Sunday afternoon (Tokyo time) game against Hanshin, then the Dodgers have a workout day Monday ahead of the two regular season games on Tuesday and Wednesday against the Cubs.
“We’ll see how these days go before even thinking about opening day,” Roberts said.
