Patriots draft Craig Woodson, S, Cal with the 106th pick in Round 4

The New England Patriots did not have to wait long to be back on the clock on Day 3 of the NFL Draft. With the fourth pick in the fourth round, and the 106th selection overall, they have selected safety Craig Woodson out of Cal.

Woodson, 24, spent six seasons at Cal and saw action in 46 games with 40 starts. A two-time honorable All-Pac 12 selection and third-team All-ACC last year, he was a versatile presence in the Golden Bears’ secondary and kicking game.

Standing at 6-foot-0, 200 pounds and running a 4.45-second 40-yard dash, he projects to see early playing time as an experienced, do-it-all defender. Woodson is joining a safety depth chart headlined by Kyle Dugger and Jabrill Peppers and is also featuring Jaylinn Hawkins, Marcus Epps and Marte Mapu, among others.

Woodson is the fifth player drafted by the Patriots this year. The team previously selected offensive tackle Will Campbell in the first round, followed by second-round pick RB TreVeyon Henderson and third-rounders WR Kyle Williams and C Jared Wilson.

The Patriots are next on the clock at No. 144 overall in the fifth round.
