BIG BEAR, Calif. (VVNG.com) — A fresh blanket of snow coated the mountains of Southern California overnight, bringing a beautiful yet challenging winter scene to Big Bear’s iconic bald eagle nest.
As the snowflakes fell, Jackie and Shadow, the beloved bald eagle couple, were busy tending to their growing family. On March 8, 2025, the third eaglet hatched, completing their nest full of three healthy chicks.
While snow swirled around the nest, Jackie, ever the dedicated mother, spent hours perched in the nest, providing warmth and protection to her young.
The winter storm added a layer of difficulty to the already delicate process of raising eaglets, but Jackie’s commitment never wavered. Her constant presence ensured that the chicks remained safe and snug, shielded from the cold.
The timing of the snowstorm coincided with the arrival of the third eaglet, which hatched early Saturday morning. The first two chicks arrived, on March 3 and in the overnight hours before the third’s birth.
As the snow continued to fall, Jackie and Shadow worked tirelessly to keep their eaglets fed and cared for, despite the wintry conditions.
“Despite the snow and cold, Jackie stayed in the nest for hours to keep the chicks warm and safe,” said Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV). “It was truly a testament to the bond between the parents and their eaglets. Even though the weather outside was harsh, Jackie made sure her young were protected from the storm.”
As the snowfall continued, Jackie and Shadow’s efforts to feed the chicks remained steadfast. The couple fed their eaglets 12 times on March 12, a typical number for bald eagle chicks at this stage.
“We may observe some sibling rivalry or bonking, which may be done to establish the feeding order within the brood. More dominant eaglets tend to eat first, while smaller ones wait for their turn or invent other creative ways to get fed,” stated FOBBV.
Although the eaglets are still developing their vision and coordination, they continue to grow stronger with each passing day.
The snow-covered landscape around the nest served as a beautiful reminder of the challenges and resilience of nature.
As the storm passed, Jackie and Shadow continued to nurture their new family, ensuring the next generation of Big Bear’s iconic bald eagles would thrive, no matter the weather.
FOBBV said it will soon announce the solicitation of suggested names for the chick trio.
