Southwest Airlines is ending another signature perk. Here’s what you need to know.

Southwest Airlines is ending one of its signature perks months after announcing it would do away with open seating.

The low-cost airline, which is one of the largest carriers at the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport, announced Tuesday it would no longer offer free checked bags starting May 28.

Members of Southwest’s Rapid Rewards A-list loyalty program or those traveling on a business fare can still check two free bags. Other A-List members and select customers will get one free checked bag. Rapid Rewards credit card members will be credited one checked bag.

The free checked bags perk has been a trademark of Southwest since it started in 1967.

In the press release announcing the change to its checked bag policy, Southwest pitched the new bag policy as a push for revenue growth while rewarding the carrier’s most loyal passengers.

Southwest also adjusted its Rapid Rewards points to grant more points for business select fares while granting less for its Wanna Get Away and Wanna Get Away Plus fares.

The carrier will also introduce variable redemption rates across flights and a new basic fare on the lowest-priced tickets purchased on or after May 28.

The Dallas-based carrier previously announced the end to open airplane seating and the beginning of premium seat options last year, citing consumer demand for assigned seating.

Southwest also began redeye, overnight flights in February, the same month it launched a partnership with Icelandair.

The carrier flies to several airports out of MSY.
