Tens of thousands without power; widespread damage from severe storms in Missouri, Illinois

ST. LOUIS — More than 150,000 customers were without power Saturday morning after a strong line of severe storms spawned several apparent tornadoes Friday night.

Tornado sirens went off several times in most of the metro St. Louis area though the National Weather Service will have to go out and survey to determine how many tornadoes there were and their strength.

“A lot of downed power lines in the area,” said 5 On Your Side’s Meteorologist Tracy Hinson. “Some areas were spared, other areas had very strong storms come through with gusts between 70 and 80 miles per hour.”

Hard hit areas visited by 5 On Your Side’s crews in Florissant, Arnold and Villa Ridge among other spots.

Downed power lines and outages have made travel in some of those areas very dangerous.
