Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is ratcheting up his criticism of China’s retaliatory moves against U.S. tariffs, describing Beijing’s latest tariff increase to 84% as “a loser for them.”

“It’s unfortunate that the Chinese don’t want to actually negotiate,” Bessent told Fox Business on Wednesday. “They are the worst.”

China, Bessent said, has “the most imbalanced economy in the history of the modern work, and I can tell you that this escalation is a loser for them. They are the surplus country.”

The Chinese export five times more goods to the U.S. than the U.S. does to China, the secretary said.

“They can raise their tariffs on us, but so what?”

China raised its tariff to 84% from 34% after President Donald Trump imposed 104% in more levies on the country at midnight Wednesday.
