Wall Street tumbles at the open as US economy contracts in first quarter

April 30 (Reuters) – Wall Street’s main indexes opened sharply lower on Wednesday after data showed the world’s largest economy contracted in the first quarter, amplifying worries about the economic hit from President Donald Trump’s tariff policies.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (.DJI)

, opens new tab fell 237.2 points, or 0.59%, at the open to 40,290.41. The S&P 500 (.SPX)

, opens new tab fell 61.4 points, or 1.10%, at the open to 5,499.44​, while the Nasdaq Composite (.IXIC)
