WVU men’s basketball fails to make NCAA Tournament

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The West Virginia University men’s basketball team will not play in the 2025 NCAA Tournament. The Mountaineers did not receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.

According to CBS’s broadcast of the bracket release, WVU was one of the first four teams out.

“It was a tough call,” NCAA Tournament Committee chairman Bubba Cunningham said. “The next team out was West Virginia.”

Against Quad 1 opponents this season, WVU went 6-10 with marquee wins over Gonzaga, Kansas and Iowa State, all of which were top-10 teams in the AP Poll at the time of the game. The Mountaineers finished the regular season as the No. 8 team in the Big 12 with a 10-10 conference record.

Senior guard Javon Small, who finished the regular season in a tie atop the Big 12 scoring leaderboards with over 18 points per game, was a First-Team All-Big 12 guard this year. His backcourt mate Sencire Harris also made the Big 12 All-Defense Team.

WVU’s tournament status, which was considered a lock before the Big 12 Tournament, was put in jeopardy in recent days following its disappointing loss to last-place Colorado in the second round of the Big 12 Tournament Wednesday afternoon in Kansas City, Missouri.
